Discover the Charm of the Low Country

Nestled along the Southeastern coast of the United States, the Low Country is a place where history, culture, and natural beauty blend effortlessly. First coined as the Golden Isles by Sidney Lanier in the “Marshes of Glynn,” it was then further popularized by South Carolina Poet Laureate Archibald Rutledge, Edgar Allen Poe, and Flannery O’Connor among others. Stretching from the sandy shores of South Carolina to the tidal marshes of Georgia, this storied region is defined by its slow-moving rivers, moss-draped oaks, and the rhythmic ebb and flow of the Atlantic tide.

Steeped in Southern charm, the Low Country carries a rich cultural legacy shaped by the traditions of a formidable founding community, the Gullah Geechee, whose language, music, and craftsmanship remain deeply woven into the fabric of the region. The Gullah Geechee further define the Low Country as extending as far up to the lower barrier islands of North Carolina, where they migrated to during and after enslavement. The flavors of the Low Country are equally distinct due to this Gullah Geechee influence and that of the natural landscape that afforded these “food ways”—seafood boils, shrimp and grits, she-crab soup, and other unique coastal dishes (now labeled as “fusion” in other regions) that reflect a culinary heritage inspired by where the ocean meets the land.

Beyond its history and flavors, the Low Country captivates with its natural beauty. Expansive salt marshes shimmer under golden sunsets, while ancient live oaks, draped in Spanish moss, create a canopy of timeless grace. Dolphins play in the creeks at dawn, and the warm breeze carries the scent of salt and sweetgrass through the humid air.

The Low Country’s charm lies not only in its scenery but also in its people—a community rooted in tradition, resilience, and a shared love for the land and sea. And at the heart of this community are our Creators—artists, designers, and visionaries who continue to breathe new life into these Low Country traditions. Their work not only reflects the spirit of this region, it fuels it. Through bold storytelling and authentic design, these creators build bridges across generations and cultures, uplifting the local  communities while honoring those who came before.

Whether you're strolling the cobblestone streets of Savannah or casting a line in a quiet tidal creek, the Low Country invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and savor the quiet magic of a place where the past and present connect.  Whether born here, transplanted or just visiting, each day is an opportunity to be inspired by this rich natural and cultural landscape created by so many varying influences that help define the grit that we have.

At Low Country Grit, these Creators channel this spirit into every piece they create. More than just artists, our partners are community storytellers who uplift our community at large by sharing knowledge, preserving tradition, and nurturing new voices. Through meaningful collaborations with local causes, our Creators use their work to amplify social impact, support environmental conservation, and give back to the region that inspires them. Together, we’re not just celebrating the Low Country—we’re building a movement rooted in purpose, art, and authenticity.
